Looking back on 2024

Writer's picture: NewAE Technology TeamNewAE Technology Team

As another year comes to a close, here are some highlights from team NewAE. Skip down to the hardware section if you’re itching to get your hands on a Husky-Plus unit.

The Stats:

  • Units shipped - 2686

  • Dog-hours spent napping in office - 2700

  • Kilograms of boxes shipped - 1883

  • Countries shipped to - 60+

  • Conferences attended - CHES, BH, COSADE, FOSSi Latch-Up

2024 saw the full recovery of our procurement and production pipeline after the pandemic. For the first time in four years, our most popular products like ChipWhisper-Husky and ChipShouter are consistently in stock at Mouser for global distribution!

Expect the rest of our products to be readily available soon. For those of you inquiring about PicoEMP availability, good news is coming in the next six months.

Hosting CHES 2024

Since our first booth at CHES 2015 in St. Malo, the CHES community has been a huge support to NewAE. This year, we were honored to host the event in Halifax, Nova Scotia (where NewAE is based) and give back to a community that has been with us from the start.

Over four days, we welcomed 338 attendees who presented 101 accepted papers. It was a privilege to host both participants and fellow sponsors!

Software updates

Husky SAD

In the last year we've poured a lot of work squeezing as many bits as possible into Husky's SAD (Sum-of-Absolute Differences) analog waveform triggering module. This trigger module lets Husky trigger on live ADC data, on the fly, at up to 200 MS/s. It started life supporting only 32 ADC samples; it was then expanded to 128, 192, and now... 512 samples!

We've made it more flexible by allowing any number of samples to be used in the SAD computation, and by introducing a new "interval threshold" parameter. We've also made it easier to learn and use by adding a new interactive "SAD Explorer" that you can use right in your Jupyter notebook. If you stopped by our booth at CHES, you might have seen a live demo of this; it's finally coming very soon to a ChipWhisperer develop branch near you.

ChipWhisperer Repo Cleanup

In last year’s wrap up, we mentioned that the ChipWhisperer and ChipWhisperer-Jupyter repositories have grown quite large over their lifespan. In particular, the .git folder has grown to be over 1GB when both repositories are checked out. A fix for this is finally being implemented and should go out in the near future!

In order to fix this, we’ll need to modify the history of the repository, so git pull will break from this. The easiest way to get the new history is to delete the repository and reclone. You should back up your repository if you’ve made any changes you’ll need after updating. If you need uninterrupted access to a version of either of the repositories, they’re available at https://github.com/newaetech/chipwhisperer-historical and https://github.com/newaetech/chipwhisperer-jupyter-historical.

ChipWhisperer Software Update

We’re also planning on finally doing a ChipWhisperer software update including the above git fixes, as well as including a bunch of fixes that we’ve made since the last update. We’re hoping to do more frequent updates in the future, which should be made much easier by the aforementioned repository cleanup. This update should go out early in 2025.

Hardware Updates

HuskyPlus

Do you need a step up from the regular ChipWhisperer-Husky? Need to add your own features to your capture hardware but ran out of room on the FPGA? Our new flagship capture and glitch hardware is coming in the new year!

If you can’t wait for that, there are limited edition “pro replacement kits” available on Mouser.com. These were created to satisfy a few specific customer needs and will never be manufactured again, featuring the very first batch of “Foundation Edition” HuskyPlus units. The kits come in a durable hard case with the widest variety of accessories we’ve ever offered in a single kit. There are four left in stock as of writing and when they’re gone they’re gone. Note that this product is NOT the NAE-CW1200-KIT as listed on Mouser. Review the datasheet to see what is included.

ChipShover

All I want for Christmas is a three axis precision positioning system machined out of solid aluminum for electromagnetic and laser fault injection! Were you able to parse that? If so, the ChipShover might be on your wishlist. A dozen units are now in use around the world and we’ll be ramping up production in Q1 2025.

They will first be available for direct purchase from the NewAE website, you better watch out!

If you are on the waitlist, you will hear from us early in 2025 to confirm orders. If you want to join the waitlist for a ChipShover, email us: sales@newae.com.

NewAE made a donation to the Parker St Food Bank again this year.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season!
